In our line we are going to recycle old furniture fabrics, brocades, suedes and vinyls, to create our garments. With these fabrics we want to revolutionize what women ages 35 – 50 are wearing. We want to create new shapes and new lines for them to give this age group a more mature look while making them feel younger and more appealing. We are going to create better fitting clothing for these women with design elements, such as line and balance, that grab the attention of everyone they pass. They are cougars and they are on the prowl. Most importantly, this fashion line will be driven by the concept of cutting down on massive consumption, but not in an over done “hippie” way which has been re-iterated time and time again. The clothes will still have a chic appeal and still be kind to the environment.

River Takada-Capel

Bio: Since I was a little girl I have always loved being creative, unique, and willing to try new things. It was only time before fashion design fell into my lap and it became a passion. After taking fashion classes throughout high school and starting to design and sew my own clothing, I knew I wanted to go to school to become a fashion designer. I wanted to learn as much as I could to make my dream a reality.

I am currently a junior in Fashion Development and Product Management at N.C. State. I am excited to be a part of this innovative and forward thinking fashion show for the second year and to create a collection that portrays elegance, glamour and drama!

Bio: Art and fashion play an enormous role in my life. Since I could hold a crayon, marker, paint brush, and such, I’ve been creating art. Fashion came into play during middle school, and since then I have dreamed of becoming a fashion designer. Creating clothes is just another form of art, and I hope that one day people will all want to wear designs by “Courtney Schaffer.”

Bio: Growing up, my mother always knew I would be a fashion designer. I sewed my first skirt at three, with the help of my aunt, and began early on drawing outfits for friends and family asking them what they wanted to wear. I attended high school at Cresset Christian Academy where I really began experimenting with clothing. I even bleached a pair of jeans to match a particular sweater I wanted to wear to school the next day. When I began working retail at fifteen, I realized how passionate I was about apparel. For every event I planned to attend, I would visualize the exact outfit I wanted to wear, but I could never find something quite as I had envisioned in a store. My frustration led me to understand I had a passion for design. I feel blessed to study the art of fashion design at Meredith College and will have the opportunity to study abroad in Paris this summer. I am in the process of earning a degree in Fashion Merchandising and Design with a Design Concentration and an English minor. I hope to one day own my own clothing line and boutique in addition to writing for a local magazine. I am honored to be participating in Redress Raleigh 2010, and would like to thank my mom, Caleb, my family, and my friends who have always believed in me and supported my dream. I thank God for all the opportunities I have been given, and I look forward to Redress Raleigh as an opportunity educate our community about environmentally responsible clothing and showcasing eco friendly fashion.

Christy Michal

After having a great experience with Redress Raleigh in 2009, she is excited be a returning designer for this year’s ecologically conscious fashion show and is grateful for having been given the opportunity to participate.

Grace has been interested in design and the fashion industry for many years, but as an advocate of reducing our impact on Earth, she has had an aversion to the wasteful methods fashion design can utilize. Hoping to stay active in the local fashion community, she is optimistic that using Redress Raleigh’s principles will get the message out that fashion can exist without being harmful to the environment.

Grace will be creating collection of dresses that make use of recycled fabrics and eco-friendly production processes.
